Typography Rules!

This just in, sites with excellent typography are some of the highest rated on the web. Well at least thats the case on commandshift3.com. For those of you stuck on Windows, command shift 3 is the keyboard shortcut for a screenshot on a Mac. Command shift 3 describes itself as hot or not for websites and basically thats what it is, you are shown two screenshots of websites, and click on the one you like the best.

The real reason for this post though, is not to promote command shift 3, but to point out that the current top 3 sites focus primarily on typography to create their desired effect.

Coming in first is Khoi Vinh's excellent subtraction.com. Khoi Vinh is creative director at the New York Times (another excelent example of web typography), and he really shows us his skill with typography on his personal blog. Khoi's command of the grid is so overwhelming that it makes me want to curl up in a ball, become a full time programmer, and never open up Photoshop again.

Second place is ilovetypography.com. A relative newcomer on the scene, I Love Typography's excellent design, and even more excellent articles makes it a must visit for any typography geek.

Holding out the field in third place is Mark Boulton's markboultondesign.com Mark Boulton is probably the biggest proponent of quality typography on the web. His redesign of his company website is an excellent example of what is possible with typography online.

Anyone who is eager to achieve this level of greatness should head over to webtypography.net absorb everything you see there, and make sure to find a copy of the accompanying book Bringhurst's "Elements of Typographic Style".
